Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Grammy Award winner) is an internationally recognised Indian musician, and inventor of the Mohan Vina. With this revolutionary instrument a cross between a guitar and a sitar he gained international attention. Student of Ravi Shankar, he has performed with leading jazz musicians such as Terry Riley, Ry Cooder, and George Brooks.
The concert will be presented at the Accademia Filarmonica Romana at 9.30 pm, with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (mohan veena), Amita Dalal (sitar) and Nihar Mehta (tabla). The performance will include pieces composed by the guru Pt. Ravi Shankar and other compositions by Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The first part of the performance will be dedicated to the Raga of the Evening. The music will start with the gradual “construction” of the Raga through the opening movements, known as Aalap, Jod and Jhala performed by the mohan veena and sitar. Following this, faster movements, known as Gats, will be performed with the addition of the tabla. In the second part of the performance, the musicians normally interpret a melody known as Dhun, which in this case is from the popular tradition of Rajasthan and is based on classical Raga, such as the Mand. To close the performance, either Rasiya , a composition by Pt. Ravi Shankar or a melody by Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, from the Grammy award winning album The Meeting by the River will be performed.
Maestro Vishwa Mohan Bhatt will conduct a 3-days Workshop (from 25th to 27th of June) on Indian music and raga, with the assistance of Amita Dalal (sitar) in the Tagore Auditorium. In parallel, Nihar Mehta will conduct a Workshop on tabla and tala in the Pagoda in the Foundation gardens. During these three days, the participants will be able to share their experiences through a series of improvisation and jam sessions during which they will play and study together.
